A Christmas strike by almost 2000 postal workers will close seven sorting offices across the UK, just a day before the last Christmas posting date.

Royal Mail staff will walk out on Friday December 19th, the day before the last posting date for first class letters to be delivered in time for Christmas Day.

The Christmas strike will affect mail centres and sorting offices in Bolton, Coventry, Crewe, Liverpool, Oldham, Oxford and Stockport.

CWU official Ian Taylor said: “We believe that Royal Mail’s plans have been drawn up without any real joined-up thinking about how the changes will affect the rest of the network.
“These changes will see a decline in the quality of service to our customers with later deliveries and fewer, earlier collections.
“Royal Mail’s actions pose a real threat to a large number of jobs.”

The union said it had “no alternative” to industrial action, claiming managers were attempting to move work out of some of the offices listed for closure before Christmas.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We’re disappointed the union would urge strike action at this time of year.”
